Art cafe

painted window panes of a Thimphu restaurant. Local artists draw floral designs, dragons and decorated penis on the walls and windows to bring good luck. In Tandin hotel, I often woke up in the middle of the chilly night to see flying thunder dragons stare at me on the walls. Dragons, lions spitting fire, leopards on prowl with fiery tales...
To the Bhutanese, daily exposure to these scary beasts is a preemptive strategy. On its way to heaven, devils would resort to all sorts of mean tricks to scare the soul. If the soul lose the calm on the way, it won't reach heaven. It can not get back to earth either and would be doomed to wander aimlessly in between, always taunted by evil spirits.
These dragon paintings strengthen the soul to face the devils on the way to heaven.
